Owner of Murrayville Post Shopping Center Donates Use of 21,000 Square Foot Storefront for Salvation Army’s Christmas Campaign Distribution Center
More than 20,000 Families Benefitted from Christmas Campaign in 2016
Wilmington Holding Corp., the owner of Murrayville Post Shopping Center on North College Road, donated the use of 21,000 square feet of space to the Salvation Army of the Cape Fear to use as a distribution center for its Christmas campaign this past holiday season. The Salvation Army used the space from early November to mid-January to collect and store bicycles, toys, clothing and other gifts for families in Columbus, Bladen, Pender, Brunswick and New Hanover counties.
Murrayville Post is a shopping center located at the intersection of Murrayville Road and North College Road in Wilmington and is managed by Coldwell Banker Commercial SunCoast on behalf of Wilmington Holding Corp.. The space used by the Salvation Army was formerly the home of Carolina BBQ restaurant and prior to that, was used as a grocery store. Additional tenants at Murrayville Post include Subway, Family Dollar, Curves for Women, Southeastern Health Care, China Wok, Camino Real Mexican Grill and The Complex Bean.
“The location was ideal, because it was easily accessible from our 2nd Street offices and it had the added convenience of restaurants and retailers right next door for our staff and volunteers,” said Major Richard Watts, Commanding Officer of the Salvation Army of the Cape Fear region. “The loading dock was great and it was well lit, safe and convenient. We literally have an army of volunteers and families in and out of that distribution center throughout the holidays, so the location and accessibility is very important. And we serve more than 20,000 families each year, so we need a very large space in which to store and distribute our goods.”
According to Major Watts, the Salvation Army of the Cape Fear collected the following in 2016:
- 52,755 toys
- 3,951 coats
- 4,500 stockings
- 1,169 bikes
- 25,000 articles of clothing
